Forward animation (animating one frame at a time, without following a storyboard) is a surprisingly similar process to documentary video, and experiments with this technique can help form new approaches to filming documentary subjects.
These animations were made over the course of several months on the way to my film [A Bodega].
Implications for Future Work
- Small-scale experiments can lead to new methods that can be incorporated into a larger-scale project.
These shorts arose out of spontaneity, animated under the camera with no plan in mind and no underlying objective. I simply bought the ingredients and set out to see what different qualities of the food I could bring out on screen. Shot in one spontaneous burst, this lack of structure led to shots I would have never planned ahead of time, as wel as techniques of object animation that would end up in [A Bodega].
